Jim Sears joined Surrey Business School in 2013 as a Senior Teaching Fellow for Entrepreneurship & Innovation after a successful career in the financial markets within investment banking and running his own company. Since the Big Bang, Jim was involved in cutting-edge financial innovation developing, structuring, and marketing new financial products related to derivative instruments and alternative investments.
At Surrey Business School, Jim teaches across a range of under-graduate and post-graduate modules for entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Finance where he brings his practical experience to bear on the classroom experience. He also is Programme Director for the Entrepreneurship MSc programme which is practice-focused to provide relevant and modern skills for setting up businesses as well as developing strategies for growth in larger organisations.
Jim has developed expertise in the area of Entrepreneurial Finance and Alternative Finance where he engages in on-going research and consulting. He was also a part of a strategic initiative by the university to launch its own crowdfunding platform in 2015 and has imbedded crowdfunding into both UG and PG modules.
In conjunction with Surrey Chamber of Commerce, Jim organises an annual forum on behalf of Surrey Business School called Access to Business Funding. the forum focuses on up-dating regional SME’s on market trends and funding opportunities for both traditional and alternative finance.
